Traffic Restrictions on 12th Street NE to Accommodate TPSS Installation Posted on October 8, 2013 Update: Due to inclement weather (rain and wind) on Thursday, October 10, the delivery of the TPSS has been moved to Friday, October 11. We currently plan to install the substation on Saturday, October 12. Weather reports currently show a chance of inclement weather on Saturday as well. We will continue to update this space as plans are updated. On Thursday, October 10th and Friday, October 11th, traffic will be restricted on 12th Street NE between G and H Streets to accommodate installation of the Midline Traction Power Substation (TPSS) at the southwest corner of 12th and H Streets. The 700 block (between G and H Streets) of 12th Street will be closed to traffic and parking beginning midday Thursday, and continuing through the work day on Friday. The TPSS is a prefabricated structure measuring 40 feet long and 20 feet wide. It will be delivered in two sections on “wide load” flatbed trailers and unloaded by a large crane. The sections will be delivered on Thursday and stored overnight on 12th Street, south of H Street. The units will then be unloaded and set in place on Friday. The traffic and parking restrictions will be lifted as soon as the TPSS installation is complete on Friday. During the street closure, traffic barrels and portable barricades will be installed at the H Street, G Street, and Linden Place intersections with 12th Street, and also at the 12th Street end of the alley behind AutoZone. Advance warning signs will be erected at the intersection of 13th Street and Linden Place, and at the 13th Street alley entrance to alert motorists about the closure. Detour signs will installed to direct the traveling public around the work zone as follows: Southbound 12th Street traffic will be detoured east on I Street, then south on 13th Street. Those who wish to return to southbound 12th Street may continue south on 13th Street to G Street, then turn west on G Street, then south on 12th Street. Northbound 12th Street traffic will be detoured to the west on G Street, then north on 11th Street to H Street. Those who wish to return to northbound 12th Street may continue on H Street to 12th, and turn north on 12th Street. Access for emergency vehicles, MetroAccess and similar services for the disabled will be maintained. Pedestrian crosswalks at the intersections will remain open. The schedule is subject to change due to weather, material and equipment availability and other unforeseen conditions.
