Construction on the H/Benning main line is complete and construction is underway on phase 2 of the Car Barn Training Center (CBTC II). Construction on CBTC II began in spring 2015 and is expected to be open in 2016.

Construction on the first phase of the Car Barn Training Center (CBTC I), which comprises the yard and the temporary storage facility was completed in 2014. The temporary facility houses our six streetcar vehicles while the permanent facility is being constructed.


Phase 2 of DC Streetcar construction along H Street/Benning Road started in December 2012 and is now complete!

About 80 percent of the work to make H/Benning streetcar-ready was completed during Phase 1 in 2011, during the Great Streets roadway reconstruction project. Testing of the DC Streetcar system began in December 2013 and continued throughout construction in 2014. DC Streetcar is now in the final phase of testing before passenger service can begin.

Hopscotch Bridge – 3rd/H Streets NE

DC Streetcar’s Western Turnaround is atop the Hopscotch Bridge. Major construction at 3rd Street NE and H Street NE closed the intersection for several months, but was reopened for pedestrians and vehicular traffic in February 2014. The construction of pedestrian ramps and other work around the Union Station garage entrance occurred in the fall of 2014. Midline Substation – 12th/H Streets NE

Midline Substation


In May 2013, the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) approved the design (as seen above) for the Midline Station at the southwest corner of 12th and H Streets NE. The substation is adjacent to Khan’s Bar & Grill. The substation was installed in mid-October. Construction on the brick enclosure and façade treatments was completed in summer 2014. Pocket Tracks – 21st-24th Streets/Benning Road NE

The pocket tracks will allow streetcars to enter and exit the Car Barn Training Center once the streetcar is up and running. Train control testing, storm filters, track tie-ins and utility work were completed in summer 2014.


Track Switches – 26th Street/Benning Road NE

Streetcar track switches were installed on westbound Benning Road for the Eastern Turnaround. To facilitate this work, 26th Street was closed in August 2013 and reopened in January 2014.


Overhead Catenary System (OCS)

Erection of the OCS poles, which hold wires that power the streetcars, was completed in late 2013. Stringing of contact wire from the OCS poles began in November 2013 and wrapped up in early 2014.
